What is Biaxin?
Biaxin is an antibiotic used to treat different kinds of bacterial infections such as tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, and bacterial pneumonia.
It is also used in conjunction with other medication to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori – a bacterium contained within the upper gastrointestinal tract of 50% of the world’s population.
How is Biaxin administered?
Biaxin is administered orally with a full glass of water. If it upsets your stomach, it can be taken with milk or food.
What are the side effects of Biaxin?
Minor side effects include diarrhea or nausea, abnormal taste in the mouth, anxiety or confusion, headache, or intestinal gas. These side effects do not require any medical attention unless they become severe.
More significant side effects include allergic reactions (i.e., a skin rash, itching, and hives; or swelling of the lips, face, or tongue), chest pain, heart fibrillations (cardiac arrhythmia), difficulty in passing urine, pain during urination, or jaundice. Should any of these side effects occur, contact your physician immediately.
What drug interactions should be avoided with Biaxin?
Avoid medications for fungal infections such as Fluconazole and Ketoconazole. Avoid medications for sleep or anxiety such as Triazolam, medications for headaches (Ergotamine or Dihydroergotamine), medications for high cholesterol (Atrorvastatin, Lovastatin, and Simvastatin), and medications for irregular heart rhythm (Amiodarone, Quinidine, and Procainamide).
Any over the counter acid inhibitors such as antacids, or medications like Prevacid should be avoided. These medications can lessen the effects of Biaxin – consult with your physician for other antacid alternatives. If you have diarrhea, consult your physician before taking an over the counter anti-diarrheal medication.
What if I miss a dose?
If you find that you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you are aware. If you happen to be close to your next scheduled dosage, only take one. Do not double up on the medication.
How should I use this medication?
Biaxin should be taken by mouth with a glass of water at regular intervals. Do not take more or less of the medication than is prescribed. Do not stop taking Biaxin – use all of the medication prescribed; even if you are feeling better. Do not skip doses.
Biaxin can be administered to children, but not without the consent and guidance of a physician.
If you think you may have taken too much of the medication, contact your nearest emergency room or poison control center.
