When is Cefaclor prescribed?

Cefaclor is an antibiotic administered to treat bacterial infections, pneumonia, respiratory infections, and a number of skin, ear, throat and urinary infections.

What are the side effects of Cefaclor?

The main side effect of Cefaclor is hypersensitivity. Patients who are sensitive to penicillin generally are also allergic to Cefaclor. The patient may get a rash with itching, fever, and anaphylaxis. Other side effects such as vomiting, headache, abdominal pain and diarrhea may come up as well. Let your doctor know if you are sensitive to penicillin or any other antibiotic.

Other more serious side effects include anemia, inability to sleep, hallucinations, dizziness, jaundice and easy bruising or bleeding.

What drugs should I avoid while taking Cefaclor?

Cephalosporin (cefaclor) reacts negatively with antacids containing H2 blockers, so antacids should not be taken when taking Cefaclor. In addition, Cefaclor can exacerbate the anticoagulant properties of the blood-thinner Coumarin (Warfarin). Tell your doctor if you are on any other prescriptions prior to taking Cefaclor.

Can I take Cefaclor while pregnant or nursing?

Cefaclor is safe to take while pregnant or nursing. It is still transmitted through the breast milk, but not in such a large quantity so as to be harmful.

How should I take this medicine?

Cefaclor is normally taken orally as per your physician’s direction. Do not take this drug more often than prescribed. Like any antibiotic, finish out the prescribed amount – even if you feel better. If you experience nausea while taking Cefaclor on an empty stomach, feel free to take the dosage with food.

What if I miss a dose?

Take the dose as soon as you can. If you find you are very close to your next dose, only take one. This drug should only be taken in 4 hour intervals.

What if I overdose?

If you suspect that you have consumed too many doses, contact an emergency room or a poison control center immediately.

Is Cefaclor safe for children?

Cefaclor can be administered to children by order of a physician. However it should not be given to a child less than a year old.
