What is Duricef?

Duricef is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections – particularly strep throat, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, reproductive tract infections, and skin infections.

How is Duricef administered?

Duricef is administered orally with a full glass of water.

What are the side effects of Duricef?

Minor side effects include diarrhea, nausea, gas or heartburn, or vomiting. These side effects do not require any medical attention unless they become severe.

More significant side effects include allergic reactions (hives, difficulty swallowing or breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue), seizures, jaundice, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, fever, severe diarrhea, sore throat, swollen joints, difficulty urinating or urinating less than usual or not at all. Should any of these side effects occur, contact your physician immediately.

What drug interactions should be avoided with Duricef?

Duricef reacts negatively when taken in conjunction with other antibiotics or probenecid – a medication used to increase uric acid in the urine. It is commonly used to treat gout.

Notify your physician if you are taking any medications, whether over the counter or prescribed, and any vitamin supplements. Your physician will have to determine whether there could be a potential for negative drug interaction.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take one as soon as possible. If you find that the missed dose is discovered too closely to your next scheduled dose, take a single dose – do not double up on the medication.

How should I use this medication?

The entirety of this medication should be taken as per prescribed instructions. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medication – even if you feel better. Do not take it more often than is directed by your physician; do not take more or less of the medication than prescribed. This medication can be taken with or without food, however if it causes upset to an empty stomach, it may be taken with food or milk.

Consult with your physician regarding the use of this medication with children as it needs to be closely monitored.

In the case of an overdose, contact the nearest emergency room or poison control center immediately.
