What is Ilosone?
Ilosone is an antibiotic used to treat different kinds of bacterial infections – such as respiratory infections. It is used primarily on patients who have an allergy to penicillin.
How is Ilosone administered?
This medicine is administered orally with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food.
What are the side effects of Ilosone?
Minor side effects include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, and stomach pain. These side effects do not require any medical attention unless they become severe.
More significant side effects include allergic reactions (hives, difficulty swallowing or breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue), dark urine, hearing loss, chest pain or cardiac arrhythmia, severe diarrhea, weakness, or jaundice. Should any of these side effects occur, contact your physician immediately.
Note: this medication, when taken in conjunction with oral contraceptives, may lessen the effectiveness of the birth control.
What drug interactions should be avoided with Ilosone?
Ilosone is adversely affected when taken in conjunction with the following drugs: methadone, droperidol, eplerenone, warfarin, other antibiotics, medications for cholesterol such as lovastatin, cerivastatin and simvastatin; medications for heart rhythm problems, or psychotic disorders.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take one as soon as possible. If you find that the missed dose is discovered too closely to your next scheduled dose, take a single dose – do not double up on the medication.
How should I use this medication?
Take this medication as prescribed by your physician – by mouth with a glass of water. It can be administered with or without food. If taking this medication on an empty stomach causes stomach upset, you may take this medication with food or milk. Take this medication at regular prescribed intervals and make sure you use all of the prescription. Do not skip doses, and do not stop taking the medication – even if you begin to feel well – unless by order of your physician.
This medication should only be administered to children on order and guidance of a physician.
