What is Minomycin?

Minomycin is an antibiotic administered to treat serious bacterial infections; most notably anthrax, dysentery, gonorrhea, cholera, pneumonia, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

How is Minomycin administered?

Minomycin is administered orally; usually in tablet or capsule form. Medication should be taken with a full glass of water.

What are the side effects of Minomycin?

Minor side effects include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, headache or dizziness, white sores inside of the mouth and swelling of the tongue, and mild itching or vaginal itching and discharge. These side effects do not require any medical attention unless they become severe.

More significant side effects include severe vertigo or convulsions, excessive diarrhea, colitis, and esophageal ulcers. Should any of these side effects occur, contact your physician immediately.

This drug is not advisable for pregnant women as it could cause deformities or even death to the fetus.

What drug interactions should be avoided with Minomycin?

Minomycin has adverse reactions when taken in conjunction with blood thinners such as Warfarin, and Isotretinoin (an acne medication) – which has been known to cause pressure in the brain leading to headaches, double vision, and permanent blindness.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take one as soon as possible. If you find that the missed dose is discovered too closely to your next scheduled dose, take a single dose – do not double up on the medication.

How should I use this medication?

Minomycin should be taken in 100 mg increments as prescribed by your physician. If more increments are desired for effective treatment, your physician may prescribe an additional 50 mg increments to be administered throughout the day.

Do not skip doses or take more or less of the prescribed amount. Always take the medication with a full glass of water and complete the entire prescription – do not stop mid-treatment. This medication can be taken with or without food; although should you experience discomfort due to taking this medication on an empty stomach, you may take Minomycin with food.

In case of an overdose of Minomycin, contact the nearest emergency room or poison control center.
