What is Zyvox?
Zyvox is an antibiotic used to treat certain kinds of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, skin infections, and any infections that cannot be cleared up by other kinds of antibiotics.
How is Zyvox administered?
Liquid Zyvox is administered orally utilizing a dose-measuring device whether it is a spoon or a cup. Zyvox in pill form may be administered orally with a full glass of water. Zyvox may also be administered intravenously into a vein.
What are the side effects of Zyvox?
Minor side effects include diarrhea, constipation, nausea or vomiting, headache or dizziness, changes in sense of taste, trouble sleeping, and mild itching or vaginal itching and discharge. These side effects do not require any medical attention unless they become severe.
More significant side effects include allergic reactions (hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue), cardiac arrhythmia, high blood pressure, seizures, vision changes, fever, confusion or restlessness, unusual bleeding, and unusual weakness or tiredness. Should any of these side affects occur, contact your physician immediately.
What drug interactions should be avoided with Zyvox?
Zyvox can be adversely affected by eating foods with tyramine in them. This combination can raise your blood pressure to extremely dangerous levels. Foods with high levels of tyramine include pickled or fermented meats, sauerkraut, soy sauce, tap beer, red wine, or aged cheeses.
Other drugs that can produce negative effects include medications for allergies, medications for blood pressure, medications for depression, anxiety or psychotic disorders, and St. John’s wort supplement.
If you drink green tea on a regular basis, eat foods with tryptophan, take diet pills, stimulants or amphetamine-based drugs, notify your physician as these may cause a negative effect as well.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take one as soon as possible. If you find that the missed dose is discovered too closely to your next scheduled dose, take a single dose – do not double up on the medication.
How should I use this medication?
Zyvox should be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician. Do not take more or less than the prescribed amount. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medication – even if you feel better.
Prior to taking the liquid medication, gently keep turning the bottle up and down 5 times to mix it. Remember not to shake the bottle. Use the dose-measuring device provided to measure the correct dosage. If you did not receive one, request a measuring device from your pharmacist.
When dealing with Zyvox in intravenous form, do not self-inject the medication if you cannot properly administer it. The infusion can take up to 2 hours to complete.
Medication is not recommended for children unless directed by a physician.
In the case of an overdose, contact the nearest emergency room or poison control center.
